Billing, plan changes and cancellation

How plan changes are prorated, what a credit balance is, how to cancel, and what happens to your data when you downgrade.

How do I change plans?

From the billing screen. Before the change is applied you see a proration preview showing the exact amount that will be charged or credited, calculated by Stripe rather than by us — PageLantern never computes money.

An upgrade takes effect immediately and charges a prorated amount for the rest of the current period. A downgrade produces a prorated credit for the unused part of the period.

Why did my downgrade give me a credit rather than a refund?

Because that is what it is. A downgrade credit is held on the account and applied against future invoices. It is not paid back to your card and is not redeemable for cash, and if you later close the account any unused credit is forfeited.

If what you want is money back rather than a smaller next invoice, the situations where we refund are listed in full in the Refund and Cancellation Policy. Downgrading is not one of them.

How do I cancel?

From the billing screen, in one click. There is no retention flow to argue past and you do not need to email anyone. Cancelling stops the subscription renewing; your plan continues to the end of the period you have already paid for, and you can undo the cancellation from the same screen before then.

For annual subscriptions we email a reminder before each renewal with the amount, the date and a link to cancel, so a renewal does not arrive unannounced.

What happens to my data when the paid period ends?

The workspace moves to the Free plan. Nothing is deleted by the downgrade itself. Free-plan limits apply from that point: monitors above the limit are paused rather than removed, history is trimmed to the shorter retention window, and features not in the lower plan switch off.

History trimming is the one that surprises people, because it is not reversible. Export anything you need before the change takes effect.

What if a payment fails?

Stripe retries over the following days and we email the account owners each time. If the amount is still unpaid 10 days after it fell due we may suspend paid features. Monitoring pauses; data is retained. Paying the outstanding amount restores the plan.
