Overview
This Refund and Cancellation Policy is incorporated into, and forms part of, the Terms of Service. Where this policy and the Terms of Service differ on billing, this policy governs.
Short version: subscriptions renew automatically until you cancel; you cancel yourself from the billing screen in seconds and keep the plan until the end of the period you already paid for; fees already paid are not refunded when you cancel early; and there are a small number of situations, listed in full below, where we do refund.
1. Plans and Automatic Renewal
PageLantern offers a Free plan and paid Starter and Team plans, billed monthly or annually at the prices on our pricing page. The Free plan costs nothing and does not expire.
A paid subscription renews automatically at the end of each billing period — monthly subscriptions each month, annual subscriptions each year — for a further period of the same length, at the then-current price for your plan, until you cancel.
Before you subscribe, the checkout screen shows the recurring amount, the billing frequency, that the subscription renews automatically until cancelled, and how to cancel. You accept those terms as part of the purchase, and we keep a record of that acceptance.
For annual subscriptions we email you a reminder before each renewal, stating the amount, the renewal date, and how to cancel, so a renewal never arrives unannounced.
We do not currently offer a paid free trial. If we introduce one, we will tell you before it converts to a paid subscription and give you a way to cancel first.
2. How to Cancel
Open Billing in your account and choose to cancel. Cancellation takes effect immediately as an instruction — your subscription stops renewing straight away — and your plan continues until the end of the period you have already paid for. You do not have to email us, call us, or speak to anyone, and there is no retention step you have to argue past.
The cancellation screen tells you the exact date your plan ends and exactly which features and limits change on that date, so there is no surprise.
You can undo a cancellation before the period ends, from the same screen, and the subscription resumes renewing.
When the paid period ends, the workspace moves to the Free plan. Your account, monitors, history and status pages are not deleted when you downgrade; the Free plan limits apply from that point, and content in excess of those limits may be paused or made read-only rather than removed. Deletion happens only when the account is closed — by you, or by us as described in Sections 11 and 17 of the Terms — and then on the timetable in Section 18 of the Terms of Service.
If you cannot reach the billing screen for any reason, email billing@pagelantern.com and we will cancel for you, effective from the date you asked.
3. Upgrades, Downgrades, and Proration
You can change plans at any time from the billing screen. Before the change is applied you see a proration preview showing the exact amount that will be charged or credited, calculated by our payment processor.
Upgrading takes effect immediately. You are charged a prorated amount for the remainder of the current period at the higher price, and the new price applies from the next renewal.
Downgrading produces a prorated credit for the unused portion of the current period. That credit is held on your account and applied against future invoices. It is a credit, not a refund: it is not paid back to your card, and it is not redeemable for cash. If you later close the account, any unused credit balance is forfeited.
Switching between monthly and annual billing works the same way, with the same preview.
If you downgrade below your current usage — for example to a plan with fewer monitors, fewer users or shorter history — the lower limits apply from the effective date. Monitors above the limit are paused rather than deleted, history is trimmed to the plan's retention window, and features not in the lower plan switch off. Export anything you need first.
4. Refunds
Fees already paid are non-refundable, including where you cancel part-way through a billing period, and notwithstanding any later request to terminate. When you cancel you keep access for the rest of the period you paid for; you do not receive money back for the unused part of it.
We do refund in the following situations, which are the complete list of refunds we commit to:
- Statutory withdrawal. If you are a consumer in the European Union or the United Kingdom, you have a 14-day right to withdraw from a distance contract. At checkout we ask you to acknowledge that you lose the withdrawal right once the Service has been fully performed. If you withdraw within 14 days and the Service has not been fully performed, we refund what you paid, less a proportionate amount for what you used.
- We terminate for convenience. If we end your subscription on 30 days' notice for our own reasons, we refund prepaid fees for the unused remainder of the current period.
- We are in material breach. If you terminate because we materially breached the Terms of Service and did not fix it within 30 days of your written notice, we refund prepaid fees for the unused remainder of the current period.
- We remove something material. If we discontinue a material feature of your paid plan during a period you have paid for, you may cancel and receive a pro-rata refund for the unused remainder of that period.
- You reject a change. If we materially change the Terms of Service or raise the price and you are on an annual plan, you may cancel before the change takes effect and receive a pro-rata refund for the unused remainder of the period.
- Wrongful suspension for authorization. If we terminate your account because we believed you were monitoring targets without authorization, and you subsequently substantiate that authorization, we refund prepaid fees for the unused remainder of the period.
- Billing error. If we charged you the wrong amount, charged you after a valid cancellation, or charged you more than once for the same period, we refund the difference in full.
We may also grant a refund at our discretion where the circumstances warrant it. Doing so once does not commit us to doing it again.
We do not refund for periods during which you did not use the Service, for a change of mind after the withdrawal period, for downgrades (see Section 3), or where we terminate your account for a breach of Section 3, Section 5 or Section 9 of the Terms of Service or of the Acceptable Use Policy.
Approved refunds go back to the original payment method, normally within 5 to 10 business days depending on your bank or card issuer. Ask for a refund by emailing billing@pagelantern.com from the address on your account.
5. Failed Payments
If a payment fails, our payment processor retries it over the following days and we email the account owners each time, so you have the chance to update the card before anything changes.
If the amount is still unpaid 10 days after it fell due, we may suspend paid features. Your data is retained during suspension and monitoring is paused, not deleted. Paying the outstanding amount restores the plan.
We may charge interest on overdue amounts at 1.5% per month or the maximum permitted by law, whichever is lower, together with our reasonable costs of collection.
Update your card at any time from the billing screen. Card details are handled by our payment processor; we never see or store your full card number.
6. Payment Disputes and Chargebacks
If you think a charge is wrong, email billing@pagelantern.com first. We will look at the account records and, where we charged you in error, refund it in full without argument. This is faster than a chargeback and it is the outcome we want.
Disputing a charge with your bank, card issuer or payment provider is a right you have by law, and we will never treat exercising it as a breach of the Terms of Service or as a reason to close your account. We ask you to come to us first because it is quicker, not because you have to. We reserve the right to suspend or terminate an account, and to recover the disputed amount together with any fees our payment processor charges us, only where a dispute is fraudulent or raised in bad faith.
When a dispute is raised we provide the payment processor with our records of the transaction, including your acceptance of these terms at checkout, the renewal notices we sent, and the account's usage. Those records are also the evidence we would rely on in any later proceeding.
7. Taxes
Prices shown are exclusive of tax unless stated otherwise at checkout. Sales tax, VAT, GST and similar taxes are calculated and added at checkout based on your billing location, and are your responsibility.
If you are a business registered for VAT in the European Union or the United Kingdom, enter a valid VAT registration number at checkout so the correct treatment is applied. Refunds of tax follow the refund of the underlying fee.
8. Changes to This Policy
We may change this policy. Changes take effect as described in Section 26 of the Terms of Service: at least 30 days' notice for a material change, applying from the start of your next billing period for monthly plans and from your next renewal for annual plans.
A change never applies to a charge already made or to a refund request already submitted.
